Chamomile

Matricaria chamomilla

Botanical Overview

Chamomile is one of the most beloved and widely consumed herbal teas in the world, and for good reason. A delicate daisy-like flower native to Europe and western Asia, it has been cherished for over 5,000 years — appearing in ancient Egyptian offerings to the sun god Ra, in Roman and Greek medicine, and in countless folk traditions across the globe. The name comes from the Greek khamaimelon, meaning "earth apple," a nod to the gentle, apple-like sweetness that drifts up from a freshly brewed cup. Two varieties are commonly used in herbal tea: German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), the most widely used, with higher concentrations of the beneficial compound azulene; and Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), slightly more bitter and often used in essential oils. Chamomile is naturally caffeine-free, making it the quintessential tea for winding down at the end of the day.
